This bird trip is lead by experienced bird guide and nature photoghapher Mati Kose.
At the end of September, the coasts of south-west Pärnu are reaching the peak of autumn bird migration. Gulf of Riga coast brings together tens of thousands of birds, following the coastline to move south in large groups.
This spectacle of nature is a unique opportunity for closer observation at Kabli, near Latvian border on the Balitc Coast, where since 1969 about half million birds have been caught in Heligoland traps and ringed at the Kabli ringing station. To have a best experience we will arrive here at the sunrise.
We will have a closer look to the work of ornithologists – capture and ringing of research
purposes. Birds that we most probably will see are Great Tit (Parus major),
Continetal Race of Long-tailed Tit (Aegithalos caudatus) and the smallest bird of Europe – Goldcrest (Regulus Regulus).
If we have good luck, we can also see Owl, catched during the night or see some rare species.
Good opportunity for experiencing migration gives Kabli birdwatching tower near the bird ringing station
Afternoon we are heading back towards Pärnu. We visit coastal wetlands of Luitemaa (Land of Dunes) Nature Reserve, these open grasslands and low bays are the preferred resting areas for tens of thousands of waterbirds. He we can meet the first migrators from Siberian tundras arriving to our shores – Tundra Swan (Cygnus bewick).
