Wilderness Experience in Soomaa National Park

Exploring the ’Land of Bogs,’ Soomaa with its meandering rivers, floodplain forests and endless bog lands is a truly special experience. In the year 2009 Soomaa National Park was awarded by European Commission as a supreme nature holiday destination – EDEN award. Also in 2009, Soomaa, the largest intact peat bog system in Europe preserved as wilderness, joined the PAN Parks network of wilderness areas as it proved excellence in combining wilderness protection and sustainable tourism development.

Soomaa National Park

We pick you up at your hotel in Pärnu at 9 am and drive to Soomaa National Park, a vast wilderness area, just 30 kilometres from Pärnu. At the vistitor centre of Soomaa National Park you will be introduced about natural and cultural values of Soomaa by watching a video-film. After that we continue to Basecamp Karuskose, in the middle of the national park. Very characteristic and special to this area of regular floods, is the building and use of traditional log-boats (haabjas). During the “fifth season” of Soomaa – season of high waters, these log-boats have been the only mode of transportation. We will look how such boats are made and go for a short bog-walking to Kuresoo bog (about 3 kilometres).
